Adoption and Special Guardianship Support Service

At Time to Listen CIC we work in collaboration with children and families who are connected through adoption, fostering and special guardianship arrangements. Adopted and fostered children and those living within kinship arrangements often develop distinct coping mechanisms which impacts on their ability to form relationships due to experiencing early trauma and relational loss. Parents, family carers and significant others within the child's support network often describe feelings like stress, frustration, anger, guilt, shame and loneliness, or feel that no-one understands what they or the child(ren) are going through, particularly in relation to specific problems and behaviours that the child(ren) may be displaying.

We offer a range of support and therapies to help both the child(ren) and their parents/carers heal through a relational approach. All our counsellors and psychotherapists have regular clinical supervision and are registered with a professional governing body. The team have a sound knowledge of child development and childhood trauma. We follow the National Minimum Standards and statutory guidance on adoption and are registered with Ofsted with a good rating in 2023. Time To Listen keep up to date with issues associated with adoption to ensure we are well equipped to meet the individual needs of the child and the family.

The arrangement of therapy is often co-ordinated through the child or young person's key-working social worker although self-funding referrals are also accepted. The social worker may apply for therapeutic funding through the Adoption Support and Special Guardianship Fund (ASGSF) for eligible adoptive, special guardianship order (SGO) and child arrangement order (CAO) families after they have completed an assessment of the family's needs.
